Jack B. Veit, III was appointed to Craven County’s top administrative post as County Manager on October 1, 2011, after serving as Assistant County Manager since May 2010. As Craven County Manager, he is responsible for a $158M general fund budget, 800 budgeted positions, and ensuring the provision of a wide array of services provided by 33 departments for over 102,000 Craven County residents.
Veit came to Craven County after serving five years in Carteret County as Assistant to the County Manager, then Assistant County Manager. A native of Pfafftown near Winston-Salem, he is the son of retired teachers Jack B. Veit, Jr. and Kathryn Veit. He graduated from North Forsyth High School and Appalachian State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with a concentration in Town, City and County Management and a master’s degree in Public Administration with a focus on Local Government Administration. Veit was awarded the Matt Williamson Local Government Scholarship in his final year of Graduate School.
His local government experience includes an internship in Stokes County, which inspired him to seek employment in county government. As Assistant Manager for Carteret County, he was responsible for capital projects and oversaw 10 departments. In the Assistant County Manager role in Craven County, he oversaw the renovation of St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bern, managed capital projects and oversaw five departments.
As Craven County Manager, Veit led Craven County through numerous hurricanes to include Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Florence, as well as natural disasters such as the Great Lakes Fire and the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, Craven County constructed a water treatment plant, a new judicial center, a new transportation facility, the Opioid Epidemic Response program, and implemented the first new enterprise resource planning system Craven County had implemented in 20 years.
Veit and his wife, Meghann, reside in the unincorporated area of Craven County with their two children.
He is a member of the Appalachian State University Local Government Alumni Association and serves as a member of the Coastal Regional Solid Waste Management Authority. He also serves as a member of the C1A Committee, the Highway 70 Corridor Committee, the U.S. 17/64 Committee, and previously served on the Joint Land Use Study Committee and Craven County 300th Celebration Committee.
His interests include Appalachian State Football, Tennis, Golf, Fishing and Cooking.
